Markley Street Construction Moving North in Norristown

The construction zone for the Markley Street/US 202 South improvement project in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, is being extended north from Roberts Street to Johnson Highway, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

The work-zone extension is part of the third stage of PennDOT’s $20.8 million project to rebuild and improve Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway.

Starting June 9, PennDOT’s contractor is shifting northbound and southbound Markley Street traffic to the east side of the street between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway to allow crews to install a new sanitary sewer line on the west side. The sewer installation will be followed by complete reconstruction of the pavement on the west side of Markley Street.

This new pattern, which will be in place through November, lengthens the work zone on the west side of Markley Street from Wood Street to Johnson Highway.

Markley Street is currently restricted to one-way southbound traffic from Roberts Street to Harding Boulevard, but carries two-way traffic in the commercial area between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway.

Crews are working to rebuild and repave the west side of Markley Street, build new sidewalks and install recessed parking areas in front of residences.

Motorists may encounter flagger-controlled, single-lane conditions in the two-way section of Markley Street on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and occasionally during weekend operations.

PennDOT began construction in February 2013 to improve 1.1 miles of Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway, and a half-mile stretch of Johnson Highway between Markley Street and DeKalb Street. The plan also included the recently completed rehabilitation of the nearby Main Street stone arch bridge over Stony Creek.

PennDOT is improving Markley Street by rebuilding the street to provide one lane in each direction plus a center lane for left turns; adding recessed parking bays in residential areas; installing trees and decorative pedestrian street lights; building an off-street parking lot at the corner of Harding Boulevard and Markley Street; upgrading traffic signals; installing new curb ramps; and adding Intelligent Transportation System components.

J.D. Eckman of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $20,825,701 contract that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Construction is scheduled to finish in fall 2016.

This project is the first of two to improve the Markley Street Corridor. A second project to rebuild Markley Street from Main Street to Elm Street is presently in engineering design. Construction is scheduled to start in 2016.
