Following completion of roadwork on Section 520, the first part of PennDOT’s Markley Street Improvement Project, two-way traffic has been restored on Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway.

Part two of the project, Section 510, is scheduled to go to construction in early 2017. Details of that project will be posted as they become available.

September 4, 2015 – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today reopened the newly rebuilt, mile-long section of Markley Street (US 202 South) to two-way traffic between Elm Street and Johnson Highway. PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards highlighted the early completion of the $20.8 million improvement project in Norristown and East Norriton Township, Montgomery County because construction was completed one year ahead of schedule.

“We are delighted to complete this major transportation improvement project well ahead of schedule and to reopen Markley Street to two-way traffic for travelers who depend upon this key north-south artery for access through Norristown,” said Richards.

The 80 percent federal, 20 percent state-funded project, which also included the rehabilitation of the historic Main Street Bridge over Stony Creek in Norristown, is the first phase of PennDOT’s two-phase plan to reconstruct and improve Markley Street.

“The new Markley Street will improve travel in Norristown with the addition of a center turn lane and new traffic signals, and the new sidewalks, curbs, utilities, landscaping, and ornamental street lights further enhance the street for the citizens who live and work along it,” Richards added.

Under the first phase of the Markley Street Improvement Project, PennDOT’s contractor initially installed new storm water and sanitary sewers, and relocated gas and water mains on Markley Street from Elm Street to Johnson Highway. Utility companies relocated aerial telecommunications lines as well as aerial and underground electric lines.

PennDOT’s contractor then completely rebuilt the one-mile section of Markley Street to include one northbound and southbound travel lane, plus a center turn lane. New and upgraded traffic signals were installed at four intersections, including the newly signalized crossing with Coolidge Boulevard/Brown Street. The intersection of Markley Street/Swede Road and Johnson Highway in Norristown and East Norriton Township was upgraded to include turn lanes, and Johnson Highway was restriped to add a center turn lane between Markley Street and DeKalb Street.

Accompanying the new traffic signals at Markley Street’s intersections with Harding Boulevard, Fornance Street, Coolidge Boulevard/Brown Street, and Johnson Highway are pedestrian push buttons, pedestrian countdown timers, continental crosswalks, and new curb ramps to enhance pedestrian travel and safety.

In addition, new sidewalks and curbing were added on Markley Street along with recessed parking slots in residential blocks, 39 ornamental street lights, and 16 trees planted in storm filter boxes. A residential parking lot also was built on Harding Boulevard at its intersection with Markley Street.

PennDOT’s contractor will plant additional trees along Markley Street during the fall planting season, starting in mid-October.

Additionally, the improvement project included the installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components, including a highway camera and travel time reader on Markley Street at the intersections of Main Street and Johnson Highway. A dynamic message sign, highway camera and travel time reader were installed on DeKalb Street at the U.S. 202 split,  and a highway camera and travel time at the intersection of Swede Road and U.S. 202.

Construction on the $20,825,701 project began in February 2013 and was scheduled to finish on September 8, 2016. However the contractor, J.D. Eckman of Atglen, Chester County, accelerated the construction schedule by combining several of the planned construction stages, which allowed crews to work concurrently at different locations along Markley Street.

The second and final phase of the Markley Street Improvement Project is in engineering design and is expected to move to construction in early 2017. This phase covers Markley Street from Elm Street to south of Main Street.

The northbound lane of Markley Street traffic was moved to the center of the street between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, on Monday afternoon (December 15).

The new traffic pattern, with northbound traffic moving to the center and southbound vehicles on the rebuilt west side of Markley Street, will remain in place until fall 2015 as crews rebuild the east side of the street under PennDOT’s $20.8 million improvement project.

Markley Street carries two-way traffic between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway, but remains one-way southbound south of Roberts Street to Harding Boulevard.

Crews will work through the winter as conditions permit to improve the east side of Markley Street between Harding Boulevard and Johnson Highway. Ongoing work on the east side includes installation of sanitary sewer lines, construction of new curbs, sidewalks and recessed parking slots, total reconstruction of Markley Street, and installation of new traffic signals and decorative street lights.

Motorists may encounter flagger-controlled stoppages and short-term closures of intersecting streets on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and during occasional weekend operations. The Markley Street work area extends from north of Johnson Highway (Swede Road) in East Norriton Township to Elm Street in Norristown Borough.

Markley Street motorists will find a new traffic pattern in place in the two-way section between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway in Norristown Borough as work begins to reconstruct the center section of the street.

The new traffic pattern, which will remain in place through late December, marks the substantial completion of construction to rebuild and improve the west side of Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway under PennDOT’s $20.8 million improvement project.

In addition to completely rebuilding Markley Street, PennDOT’s contractor and regional utility companies have installed new water, sewer and gas mains, relocated above ground electrical wires, and replaced subsurface telecommunications lines. New curbs and sidewalks have also been constructed, and recessed parking areas have been provided in front of residences within the project area.

The new pattern, which will be in place Tuesday afternoon, places a single lane of southbound Markley Street traffic onto the rebuilt west side of the street between Johnson Highway and Harding Boulevard. A single lane of northbound traffic remains in place on the east side of Markley Street from Roberts Street through Johnson Highway. Markley Street remains one-way southbound south of Roberts Street.

With the new pattern established, crews will excavate the existing pavement and completely rebuild the center section of Markley Street at the northern end of the project area.

In addition to work at the northern end, construction continues to rebuild the street, construct new curbs, sidewalks and recessed parking slots on the east side of Markley Street between Lincoln Street and Roberts Street.

Motorists may encounter flagger-controlled lane closures and short-term closures of intersecting streets on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and during occasional weekend operations. The Markley Street work area extends from north of Johnson Highway (Swede Road) in East Norriton Township to Elm Street in Norristown Borough.

Motorists traveling on Markley Street will move onto fresh pavement Monday, August 25, when a new southbound traffic pattern is established beginning at Roberts Street in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

The traffic pattern change is associated with the fourth stage of construction on the $20.8 million project to rebuild and improve Markley Street between Elm Street in Norristown and Johnson Highway in East Norriton Township. Construction is scheduled to finish in fall 2016.

The new pattern will move a single lane of southbound Markley Street traffic over to the newly rebuilt west side of the street between Roberts Street and Harding Boulevard.

In conjunction with the traffic pattern change, the work zone on the east side of Markley Street will be lengthened, allowing crews to excavate the old pavement and continue the installation of a new water main between Lincoln Avenue and Roberts Street. Working south to north, crews will follow the water main installation with complete pavement and sidewalk reconstruction on the east side of Markley Street.

Traffic flow on Markley Street is currently one-way southbound from Roberts Street to Harding Boulevard, and two-way between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway.

Markley Street drivers may encounter flagger-controlled lane closures and short-term closures of intersecting streets weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on occasional weekends. The Markley Street work area extends from north of Johnson Highway in East Norriton Township to Harding Boulevard in Norristown Borough.

A new traffic pattern starts Tuesday evening (July 1) for southbound travelers on Markley Street in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, as construction progresses on a $20.8 million roadway improvement project, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

The single lane of southbound Markley Street traffic will be shifted over to the newly rebuilt west side of the street between Fornance Street and Harding Boulevard.

Following the traffic pattern shift, crews will excavate the old pavement and install a new water main on the east side between Fornance Street and Lincoln Avenue. The water main installation will be followed later this summer and fall by complete pavement and sidewalk reconstruction on the east side of Markley Street.

Residents are advise to not park vehicles on an angle anywhere along the Markley Street work area, including the larger paved roadway work areas in front of homes.  All parking within the Markley Street corridor should be parallel to the curb.

Angled parking may cause fast moving water during heavy and sudden storms to hit the broad side of the vehicle’s tires and force water up over the curb and onto the sidewalk and grassy areas.

In addition, parallel parking will be necessary to provide enough room for the southbound travel lane when traffic is shifted to the west side of Markley Street during the week of June 30th for the start of reconstruction on the east side of Markley Street between Fornance Street and Harding Boulevard.

The construction zone for the Markley Street/US 202 South improvement project in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, is being extended north from Roberts Street to Johnson Highway, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

The work-zone extension is part of the third stage of PennDOT’s $20.8 million project to rebuild and improve Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway.

Starting June 9, PennDOT’s contractor is shifting northbound and southbound Markley Street traffic to the east side of the street between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway to allow crews to install a new sanitary sewer line on the west side. The sewer installation will be followed by complete reconstruction of the pavement on the west side of Markley Street.

This new pattern, which will be in place through November, lengthens the work zone on the west side of Markley Street from Wood Street to Johnson Highway.

Markley Street is currently restricted to one-way southbound traffic from Roberts Street to Harding Boulevard, but carries two-way traffic in the commercial area between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway.

Crews are working to rebuild and repave the west side of Markley Street, build new sidewalks and install recessed parking areas in front of residences.

Motorists may encounter flagger-controlled, single-lane conditions in the two-way section of Markley Street on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and occasionally during weekend operations.
